I wanted to make my song a bit longer but I found that I kept coming up small snippets of songs that have nooooo relevance to each other..
so tomorrow I talked to my flute teacher and I'm hoping to find a way to connect my small compositions into one song :)

Practice: Poem Composing
Sorry for the "jagged" sounds. I had the camera facing down, which was also covering the mike. But, I hope you get the basic idea of my song.
I made up a really simple song for the poem "Traveling Through the Dark" by William Stafford. I basically wanted to focus on the sadness of the impact that technology has on nature. Here's a copy of the poem:
Traveling through the dark I found a deer dead on the edge of the Wilson River road. It is usually best to roll them into the canyon: that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead. By glow of the tail-light I stumbled back of the car and stood by the heap, a doe, a recent killing; she had stiffened already, almost cold. I dragged her off; she was large in the belly. My fingers touching her side brought me the reason-- her side was warm; her fawn lay there waiting, alive, still, never to be born. Beside that mountain road I hesitated. The car aimed ahead its lowered parking lights; under the hood purred the steady engine. I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red; around our group I could hear the wilderness listen. I thought hard for us all--my only swerving--, then pushed her over the edge into the river. |

work work and work
So far I've been composing small pieces yet I havent been able to find a nice way to combine all of them together.
In class for google day Katie Chang helped me record my short theme song for the poem "Traveling in the Dark" by William Stafford. I will be posting the recorded video and a copy of the poem shortly.

google day
today i focused on what scales im planning to use for my composition. i want to focus on minot scales to enhance the slow and sad mood. also to help with my composition skills im planning to use a poem (william stafford's probably) and try to compose a short piece that fits the words. hopefully that will improve my skills and help me gain a little snippet of what its like to compose a piece ;)

one step forward!!
I talked to my flute teacher last week and I decided to compose a flute solo. Im working on pentatonic scales. My objective is to compose a slow song and incorporate a whispy and mysterious feel with my flute by blowing less air into the instrument and instead sending the air out. Hopefully this technique can make the song a bit more dramatic yet soothing

I'm planning to work with my Flute teacher to compose a song. I haven't decided which instrument, but I know that I'm interested in composing music.
